Ian Loughead on How Taking the Time To Slow Down Made Him a Faster Runner
This is a conversation about learning to slow down to run fast. Ian is a fellow running coach and one of the BLT Runners' founders in Halifax, NS. He is always finding a way to give back to his community through volunteering with the BLT runners coaching speed workouts, organizing races to fundraise for charity, and picking up tons of trash while he is out for his runs.
I always look forward to having a fellow running coach on the show so we get a chance to nerd out on all things running and training, and this conversation with Ian did not disappoint. There was a ton of knowledge dropped around heart rate training and regular body maintenance.
Ian's running story is relatable, but I think it needs to be shouted from the rooftops. When he first got into the sport of running, he was really struggling to improve, and he didn't enjoy it all that much. But when he decided to double down and embrace heart rate training, everything changed. Yes, he had to slow down his pace a lot initially, but over a few months, the transformation that happened in his body allowed him to run much faster but with ease and enjoyment that he wasn't previously able to find.
