Why New Leaf and Coach Rick Canning?

We LOVE seeing athletes succeed! This is what it’s all about!

Here’s what some of our athletes have to say.

“Rick coached me through my first trail Ultra and helped me achieve a BQ on my first road marathon, all during some very challenging times in my life. His support and one-on-one approach helped immensely to overcome some of life’s hurdles to achieve my running goals. He is approachable, attentive, responsive, and tremendously supportive - all the best attributes in a personal coach. He celebrates the achievements of his athletes as much as (or more than?) he celebrates his own :) I would recommend him to anyone looking for a personal coach!” - Leah

“After 7 years of running, and 3 years of taking it seriously, I decided to reach out to Rick at New Leaf for some help with an upcoming 1/2 marathon. At that point, I knew I had the dedication and the motivation, but I needed some help with a proper training plan. Over the course of my training, Rick designed workouts with my goal in mind, and always accommodated my ever-changing personal schedule. What I found most beneficial was being able to ask questions along the way. Rick was always quick to respond with tips for running in the heat, how to make the most out of my speed work, pain and injury prevention, and sometimes just to reassure me that things were going well. I made some serious progress over the course of that training cycle, and I have become a better, faster runner as a result. In the end, I managed to surpass my original 1/2 marathon goal, and I can’t wait to see what next season will bring.” - Lindsay

“After one failed attempt to run a half marathon and dealing with multiple small injuries I decided to seek out a running coach. New Leaf Endurance surpassed every expectation I had. They are extremely professional but also take an interest in the individual. With their help I set out a goal to complete a 48km Ultra and achieved this goal without injury. They are flexible when possible with their training plans and understand that sometimes life gets in the way and things need to be adjusted or rescheduled. I also really enjoy that the training plans are easily accessible on my phone for quick reference and Rick is always quick to get back to me if I have any questions.

I would recommended them to anyone and I will continue to be a client of theirs into the future.”  - Chalmers

“I had the opportunity to practice hill training one-on-one with Rick one afternoon, and I was stunned by the accuracy and benefits of his tips. After signing up for the Blue Nose as a New Year's resolution, I knew I needed help, and Rick seemed the perfect choice.

I enjoy the focused coaching, his listening to my concerns and questions, and addressing my priorities in the plan he gave me. As a result, I was able to train in a way that was challenging, yet not damaging to my body. He pushed me hard enough to build a lot of endurance, and his training plan was very clear and easy to follow.

On the morning of the race, I had zero stress at the starting line, because I truly felt prepared, and that made the race really enjoyable!” - Troy P.

“NLRC provides knowledge and program flexibility which allows me to make informed decisions when setting goals and developing training plans. When I experienced some minor injuries before the PEI and Boston marathons, Rick helped me overcome the self-doubt and adjust my training plans to help me achieve my goals.” - Jeffrey Mosher

“Through 2 seasons of running, Coach Rick was with me every step of the way. He took me from a 45min 10k down to 41min and was excellent at adapting to injuries. He is quick to provide feedback, alter training plans and he's a wizard on the roads and the trails. He's willing to learn, listen and he's an excellent resource for any level of running. I signed up for his first Winter speed sessions and then started training full time with him after that. I couldn't recommend him enough. Last one, fast one!” - Damian

“I highly recommend working with Rick. Considering the amount of time a semi-serious runner will spend running, you owe it to yourself to be executing the workouts that drive the right results. Rick will build that plan and even help you with all the non-running stuff (i.e. life!) that tries to prevent you from reaching your goals. Let Rick create the plan and provide the on-going advice, you just execute, have fun, and be amazed by the results!” - Mark

“I've trained with coach Rick for two big race goals. Though I had already learned a lot about how to train from previous training cycles, I would never have gotten to that next level without Rick's deep knowledge. But even more importantly, he knows how to motivate me when I needed to train harder, and how to keep me in check when I need to recover. From his excitement when I met my goals, I know that he is just as invested in my training as I am. In addition to his personal programming, it's also a big help to meet up for Furiously Frosty Morning Fun Time in the winter, when I need that motivation and team support the most. I get to meet up with runners of all levels and have a blast before the sun comes up. Rick is good at making sure that the workout is fun and beneficial for us all.” - Chad
