Janna Morrison on What it Means to Live a Life of Balance

This is a conversation about filling your soul up outside of your "job". Like me Janna works as a Professional Engineer, but that is not all that defines her. We often get hung up on what we do for a living as our single source of what is most important in our lives and how most of society tries to judge us, and you've probably heard the buzz phrases like your job should be your passion. Even if you do like your job and enjoy what you do for a living, I'd say it is pretty rare to have a job that ticks all of those boxes for you, and that is normal. But it is also ok and normal to seek additional fulfillment outside of this job, which can be extremely rewarding. When you do this, you end up showing up in your life as a better, more whole human.

Outside of being an Engineer, Janna is a yoga teacher, a director of the North End Runners, and an Ultramarathoner. Yes, we do get into talking about all things running, but this conversation goes much deeper than that, and Janna shares many insights about how Yoga, running and mindfulness can all work together, each enhancing the practice of the other. She also drops some great tips about how Yoga can help with core strength and prevent injuries too.

I met Janna a few ago at a North End Runners Group Run. At one of the Wednesday night sociables, we ended up sitting down and chatting and found out that we have a lot in common, and not just running. Janna is one of the only people that I have had the pleasure of meeting who is balancing a professional career, athletic pursuits and coaching others (well in her case teaching others, but it is the same thing) and what we both seemed to agree on is that through pursing things outside of our main jobs we were better people for it. We showed up as better partners, better family members, better friends, and better employees. This conversation I had with Janna left me wanting more, and it's taken a few years and starting a podcast to pick up where we left off finally.
