Sarah Warford on How Great Things Happen When You Lean In To Opportunity

If you've been listening to this podcast for a while, then you know two things now: I love running and I love dogs. So I decided to go right to the source for all things dogs and running with this conversation.

Sarah Warford competed for Canada at the world championships for canicross. She is also the one who is mainly responsible for bringing the sport of canicross and dog harness sports here to the Maritimes, and she also coaches others in the sport. Many of her athletes have also gone on to compete both nationally and internationally.

This is a conversation about leaning into opportunity and taking chances. Sarah started with a dog running business, where she would take people's dogs for runs instead of taking them for walks. But then something happened, she became known as the one who was out running with all the dogs, and people started coming to her asking her how they could learn to do the same. At the time, she didn't know anything about the sport of canicross. Still, when the universe spoke, she listened and leaned into the opportunity, which eventually led her to the sport of canicross and founding the dog runnin club.

The truly amazing thing is that this was not the only time Sarah leaned into an opportunity that changed her life. As Sarah was coming up in the sport, an absolute legend in canicross, Murielle offered to take her under her wing and show her ropes. At the time, this was huge, as there was nothing here in Nova Scotia to help her develop as an athlete. This opportunity meant she needed to, on a whim, book some last-minute flights, hop on a plane and commit to her training. This experience truly allowed her to see who she could be as an athlete.

All of Sarah's athletic achievements aside, you can hear the passion she has in her voice for the athletes she coaches and for dog sports. I enjoyed the opportunity to sit down and pick the brain of a true master of dogs and running. Still, even if you are not into running with dogs, Sarah drops so much knowledge on what it takes to go after your dreams that you're going to want to pay attention and take note.
