Wilco Cramer on What to Do When You're Told Going For your Next Run Might Actually Kill You

Wilco Cramer is an accomplished Ultra Runner who completed his first 100 mile at Antelope Canyon and later that year he was my pacer for my 100 mile race at the Capes 100. Yes, the conversation gets into all the details of both of those races, but shortly after pacing me Wilco was diagnosed with genetic heart condition and he immediately had to stop running and being active altogether as it might kill him. Wilco's attitude and determination since getting this diagnosis has been nothing short of inspiring and we can all stand to learn something from how he handled this life-changing event.

I've known Wilco for a few years now, and since he paced me during my 100 mile race, we have become great friends sharing many miles and trails. When Wilco told me the news of his heart condition, I got pretty emotional about it. How could someone so active who took care of himself get a diagnosis like this? It was unfair that someone could have their passion and their outlet stripped away from them in an instant. I began to wonder how I would react if I would put in the same situation.

Over the coming months seeing how Wilco continued to have a positive attitude and show he stayed determined that he would find a way to get back to a pace where he would enjoy endurance sports again was nothing short of inspiring.

This is a conversation about accepting where you are at and setting realistic goals and expectations in the direction you want to be going. No matter how small the goals are, having something to focus on and acknowledge small amounts of progress along the way is so powerful. It allows you to shift from a negative mindset to a positive one and focus on the action you can take to change your circumstances.
