Shawn McCardle on A Trip That Changed His Life
This is a conversation about listening to your gut when you know it’s time for a change. In Shawn’s case, he took a lot of courage because he didn’t have the answers he was looking for when he decided it was time for a change. Instead of waiting to know all of the answers first, Shawn and his wife took a leap of faith and took an extended trip away and what they found is quite an inspiring tale.
This conversation gets right to the roots of my origins as an ultra runner. Shawn was the race director of the Brookvale 50k race in P.E.I., my very first ultra-marathon. Five trips to the Brookvale Ultra Trail Races later, I never could have guessed that we would have become friends who have shared some great adventures. One of which he paced me through the night of a 142k triple looper around the Cape Chignecto Park here in Nova Scotia.
Shawn is an accomplished ultra-runner who has run in the alps, and many ultras here closer to home. We get into the details of some of these epic experiences during our conversation as well.
Over the years, as I have gotten to know Shawn, I learned that he wasn’t always a cabinet maker. In fact he started out as program director for a YMCA. The story he told me of how he came to find woodworking later in life was very inspiring.
It was great to sit down with Shawn and re-hash some of these adventures, and I know you will enjoy it!
